Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. It was so magical I offhandedly bought this series from Book Outlet one day and it’s just been sitting on my shelves. I think most will feel the start is slow, but I find this an eminently easy read that’s comfortable and enveloping to step into. It is set in a world where the Good Folk – fey creatures with strange, magical powers – live hidden in the trees, rocks and shadows.
But can Neryn trust the enigmatic Flint to lead her safely to Shadowfell – especially when the Good Folk warn her against him? This Shadowfell book review was written by Marysia Kosowski. Marillier has said, ”Many fantasy stories … tap into the archetypal themes of mythology, which involve the highest stakes – defeating evil, saving the world, being happy ever after … [however] that need not involve slaying a dragon or saving the whole of Middle Earth, it can be an individual, personal journey to enlightenment”.

It has all the right ingredients to become a remarkable trilogy and I love the fact that everything is set up so perfectly for us.

Honestly, I fell in love with him from the start. Really I just loved everything about this book and can’t wait to get started on the rest of the series!

Fifteen-year-old Neryn’s confusion and fear will speak to any girl of the same age, and the mystery around the true identity of her rescuer is handled masterfully. Blah, blah, a thousand times BLAH. The translation and revision are ok, I just didn’t get what’s with putting a comma after every “but” A good story, deftly narrated, with Juliet Marillier’s special writing.
Also, please write faster Ms. By the world, the story and the writing. I so loved the glimpses of their individual personalities and their varying reactions to Neryn. I love this even more on a re-read. I admired her resilience, her strength, her kindness, and her hopeful nature, so I definitely did like her and I even understood how so much of her past had made her the way she was, but I was still hoping for something more from her overall which I, unfortunately, did not get to see.
Marillier is a consummate craftswoman. Neryn has jukiet secrets. During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. On to book 2! I love the long travelling scenes in Lord of the Ringsthe camping scenes in Harry Potterand all that good stuff.
From start to finish I was completely enthralled with magillier story and just couldn’t put it down!
