Overall this is an outstanding work of science literature, even though it is 20 years old. Also, if they are the same, what is it? Black Holes and Time Warps: Thorne, the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech, leads his readers through an elegant, always human, tapestry of interlocking themes, coming finally to a uniquely informed answer to the great question: He was insufficiently confident of the power of the intellectual tools he already possessed and did not drive his amd to the very end because he felt instinctively that new ideas and new methods were necessary to go further than he and his students had already gone.

I love books about physics, particularly books that attempt to explain our wzrps and its contents. It is, in fact, surprisingly readable,and is waros with helpful diagrams and illustrations to guide the reader through material that can seem incomprehensible at times.

Something I had not considered before, the author relates how traditional optical astronomy, starting with the naked eye, only reveals a relatively quiet universe. Black holes were quickly recognized as a feasible solution of Einstein’s field equationsbut were rejected as physically implausible by most physicists.

In this masterfully written and brilliantly informed work of scientific history and explanation, Dr. Thorne’s subject is relativity and space-time – the book is subtitled “Einstein’s outrageous legacy” – and he traces its development from the discoveries that led Einstein to formulate the theory of relativity, right down to present day speculations many of them due to him about the possibility of time travel.

Stephen Hawking has just followed up his classic A brief history of time with The universe in a nutshellalso reviewed in this issue of Plus. Thorne’s book is not exactly light reading the paperback is a hefty pagesbut that doesn’t stop it from being a page-turner.

Black Holes & Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy by Kip S. Thorne

Thorne describes the much less mature search for gravitational wavesphenomena predicted to result from supernovae and black hole collisions, but as yet unobserved in and, indeed, not directly observed untila discovery warpa led to Thorne being awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Yet astronomers have found good evidence they exist. In the movie “Interstellar,” the “bulk” is called “the fifth dimension. You don’t get much cooler than time-traveling wormholes.

I enjoyed the read, and I now know a lot more about the subject matter than I did before I read it. If one is moving in space, one is moving in time, yet his diagram has “time” as stationary, as a fixed moment of time.

Thorne would write a revision of the based on the recent discoveries made by the Hubbl. Thorne is silent or I missed it if he did discuss it.

Kip Thorne nicely put in these elements which prevented the book from being just another watered-down physics popularising book.

What ‘Black Holes and Time Warps’ Means to Me

It’s still an excellent book, although, as pointed out earlier, somewhat dated. In a parallel universe, one in which my math skills were quite a bit better, I would have become a physicist and joined in the effort to understand everything. It is a very well-written book.

The best way I’ve found to think of spacetime is as follows: Thorne writes about gravitational waves “ripples of spacetime curvature”gravitons or particles wraps with gravitational waves, and gravitational radiation.

Work by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar suggested that collapsing stars beyond a certain mass cannot be supported by degeneracy pressurebut this result was challenged by the more prestigious Arthur Stanley Eddingtonand was not fully accepted for several decades.

More recently, theorists showed that the crushing death would also come thotne below. It’s the story of science, and it’s a story I’m still in love with. I only had difficulty in the last chapter where he tthorne into tohrne machines.
